King Abdicates, Spain People Demand Monarchy Abolition

Spain’s cabinet is discussing about  Juan Carlo’s decision to abdicate the throne to his son, Prince Filipe. On the other hand, people demand Spain need a new government system, they want the monarchy to be abolished.

On Monday (June 2, 2014) King Juan Carlo announced his intention to hive up his position of being King of Spain after ruling for 40 years.

The Prime Minister Marioano Rajoy said the cabinet meeting intended to find a constitutional ways to set Felipe as the King of Spain replacing Juan Carlos.

Spain does not have any specific constitution about royal succession to lead. Therefore, government should prepare its legislation so that the transition can run smoothly.

Two major force in parliament has declared his loyalty to the empire. But on Monday night, thousands of people in various cities and towns in Spain protest demanding that a referendum should be held, in order to determine the continuity of the monarchy in the country.

Juan Carlos started his reign of Spain in 1975, after General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship run for 36 years. Juan Carlos transform Spain into a country with a parliamentary system of government monarchy. Until now, his more prominent position as a figure head of state.
Public opinion of Felipe is cleaner than the prestige of his sister and Juan Carlos who twisted with investigation of corruption cases. Felipe's sister and her husband is still in the investigation of various cases of corruption. While Juan Carlos hurt people’s heart when the king, who is now 76-year-old, caught jaunt to Botswana in April 2012 amid the financial crisis and the country's economy, which until now has not fully recovered and led to a very high unemployment rate.
